Citizenship is the status of an individual who is a national or permanent resident of a country. Individuals who hold citizenship enjoy certain rights and responsibilities, such as the right to vote or hold public office, as well as the responsibility to obey the laws of their country and serve on jury duty when called upon. There are a variety of ways to obtain citizenship, such as being born in the country or naturalizing after living in the country for a certain period of time. In order to maintain their citizenship status, individuals must meet certain requirements, such as paying taxes and serving in the military if their country has conscription. Citizenship is an important status that comes with a great deal of privileges and responsibilities.
