Sponsoring Agency

The sponsoring agency of a passport is the government agency that is responsible for issuing passports to citizens of the country. In many countries, this responsibility lies with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Department of State. The sponsoring agency is also responsible for maintaining a central database of passport holders and their personal information. This information can be used by law enforcement and intelligence agencies to track the movements of individuals and to prevent terrorist activity.
