The State Department's mission is to "promote peace, security, and prosperity around the world through diplomacy, development, and defense." The State Department works with other federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, to advance U.S. interests in a complex and ever-changing world. The State Department also works closely with foreign governments and international organizations to promote peace and stability, combat terrorism and proliferation, expand economic opportunity, and protect human rights.
